Working at home sounds ideal to most people. It gives the impression that you can easily complete your work, household chores, and care for your family in the same amount of time you would normally spend during a normal work day. However, this can't be further from the truth. Working from home still means you have to put in the hours required and with the amount of distractions most people have at home this can be difficult. Organization is the key to being successful at any at home job and if you master it, there may even be time to fit everything else in too.
Everyone who works from home needs a proper home office. Your home office needs to include all of the equipment needed for you to complete your job as well as any storage needed for paperwork you may have. At the very least you should have a desk with ample space, a comfortable chair, a reliable computer, and Internet access. These basic things are required for most jobs, but depending on your work you may need other things as well.
Another important key to organization when working at home is your schedule. Most home jobs allow you to have a flexible schedule. While some jobs allow you to simply work whenever you want, others may require you to schedule your time and stick to that schedule. The important thing is how you handle your work time. It's imperative that you set aside certain hours each day to focus solely on work. For those with children, sticking to the same schedule throughout the week will help them get used to your schedule and provide for less interruptions during "work time."
Productivity is important to employers. The last thing they want is someone who is irresponsible and unable to complete the tasks at hand. This is why organizing yourself and your office is the key to your success. Working at home can be a blessing, but if you are unorganized and unreliable you will lessen your chance of success.
